Acupuncture

Acupuncture is a part of Traditional Chinese Medicine. In traditional Chinese theory there are channels of energy called meridians that run on and through the body.

Chi (pronounced “Chee”) is the basic life force that runs through the meridians. If Chi builds up (stagnates) or becomes deficient in an area, pain and illness result. An imbalance in the flow of Chi may be caused by external factors, congenital attributes, poor diet, or by lifestyle. Stimulation of specific points on the meridians restores the normal flow of Chi, and harmonizes the energy in the body.

From a conventional western point of view, acupuncture affects the nervous system. Most acupuncture points are found along nerves. Stimulation of these points can change levels of neurotransmitters such as serotonin and endorphins, alter white blood counts and blood pressure, and decrease pain.

All these effects except pain, can be measured objectively, but western theory cannot yet explain the mechanisms by which they occur.
